10 GigE Cameras – Technology Resolution

GigE Vision is global camera interface standard introduced in 2006 to levitate the performance of digital industrial cameras. It is based on the Gigabit Ethernet communication protocol for transmitting high speed data over Ethernet networks. It allows to transfer images over long lengths using low cost standard cables for fast transmission. Around the world, many companies have widely adopted GigE vision interface by introducing GigE Vision compliant 10 GigE cameras to materialize its benefits including uncompromised data transfers, standard connectors, high bandwidth, highly scalable and low cost integration.

Basically, 10 Gigabit Ethernet interface is an extension of GigE Vision technology (1 Gigabit Ethernet) being the leading interface. For machine vision applications, 10 GigE proves to be 10 times more effective than GigE interface as it provides 10-fold increase in the data rate and frame rates respectively. Many companies are tending to leverage the benefits of 10 GigE interface for varied machine vision applications. The GigE Vision cameras are effectually used in various applications related to Telecom, industrial, military and data communications.

With 10 GigE Vision cameras, the cost of expensive frame grabbers is greatly eliminated as all you need is the perfect length of cable thus reducing the cost of CAT6A installations. However, other interfaces such as CXP-6 CoaXpress, SFP+ and Camera Link rely on expensive pre-made cables requiring high maintenance costs and difficult field termination. Moreover, 10 GigE cameras offer more reliability to prevent data loss as compared to Camera Link which requires expensive cables for detecting and managing errors in real time. GigE Vision cameras based on 10 GigE technology, thus makes it ideal to minimize latency by its superior speed for real-time video applications i.e. telemedicine, conferencing and motion-tracking.

The 10 GigE Vision cameras based on standard 10 Gigabit Ethernet interface thus eliminates the need for complicated link aggregation systems, buffered bursts and latency compression by offering superior bandwidth to deliver high resolution, high quality images at high frame rates, low latency and low cost, all over single cable.
